What You Can Learn from the Bible’s Couples

When you walked down the aisle, what was your vision for you and your spouse? Did you want a “nice” marriage?

A “friendly” marriage?

A “we get along” marriage?

Probably not.

Most couples are searching for intimacy, connection, romance, and excitement. But years into their marriage, many husbands and wives are bored. Life has settled into a routine – a rut, really – and they’re not connecting like they once did.

If you’ve reached that place in your marriage, you might be thinking, “This isn’t what I had in mind.” The good news is that’s not what the Bible says God has in mind for you, either.

According to author and counselor Dr. David Clarke, our guest on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “What You Can Learn from the Bible’s Couples,” God wants your marriage to be “outrageously good.”

“Outrageous” isn’t usually the word we pull from our lexicons to describe how good a marriage can be. But Dr. Clarke says an examination of the Bible’s couples shows that’s exactly what the Lord wants to help married couples to achieve.

First and foremost, successful couples in the Bible had God at the center of their relationships. That’s evident when they made wise decisions, of course. But it also shows up in their mistakes. They learned from their blunders and relied on God to right their path.

And that may be one of the most important points of all: Outrageous doesn’t mean perfect. Every marriage has some mixture of good and bad that defines it. What makes the difference is a commitment to pursue a relationship God’s way.

Adam and Eve. Abraham and Sarah. Isaac and Rebekah. Joseph and Mary. Each of these couples, and many others, serve as both positive and negative examples of an outrageous marriage.
