Focus on the Family President Jim Daly’s Statement on Senate Passage of Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The United States Senate’s passage of H.R. 8404, the deceptively titled “Respect for Marriage Act,” is a blow to religious freedom and should it become law, which now seems more likely than not, threatens to further undermine the very fragile foundation of the family.

In opposing this misguided legislation, social conservatives put up a valiant effort. We’re grateful for friends of the family in the Senate, especially Senators Lee, Lankford and Rubio. Each of them offered amendments intended to protect the deeply held religious convictions of organizations like Focus on the Family.

URGENT: Ask Your Senators to Vote “NO” on the So-Called “Respect for Marriage Act”

I’m making an URGENT appeal to you today to contact your U.S. senators as soon as possible to ask them to vote “NO” on H.R. 8404, the mis-named “Respect for Marriage Act,” which is reportedly coming up for a vote either today or tomorrow.

At Focus on the Family, we are concerned that the bill accomplishes the exact opposite of what its name implies. It changes the definition and meaning of marriage and would be nearly impossible to reverse.

Honoring America’s Veterans

Today, on a special Veteran’s Day edition of our Focus on the Family Broadcast titled “Honoring America’s Veterans,” we’re raising the flag in honor of those military families who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I might celebrate freedom.

Every American, regardless of your political or social views, owes a debt of gratitude to the generations of military personnel who have helped secure our freedom and keep it for nearly 250 years.

Jim Daly Statement on Midterm Election Results

“Every Election represents a referendum on the past and present as well as a projection of the hopes and dreams for the future. While results are still coming in and many questions remain as of this Wednesday morning, it’s clear to me that our charge as Christian citizens remains strong.

“We are people of love and hope, and we have a responsibility to share Christ’s Good News with our family, neighbors and co-workers. We must demonstrate these Gospel principles by our actions and our speech.

One Single Vote

Does one single vote have any power?

If you doubt that it does, you’ve probably never heard the story of Jamison Shoemaker. In 1836, he cast one single vote that set off a chain reaction of political moments that changed the course of our nation’s history.

Shoemaker, an Indiana farmer, was so busy working his fields that he forgot it was Election Day until a neighbor reminded him. Shoemaker got to the polls just before they closed.

What’s Wrong with the World?

If you could change one thing to improve the world, would you focus on everybody else’s problems? Or would you look in the mirror?

The late philosopher G.K. Chesterton once received a letter from a man who asked, “What is wrong with the world?” The man expected to receive a brilliantly articulated reply. Instead, Chesterton wrote back and said, “Dear, sir. What is wrong with the world? I am.”

Chesterton understood that even if everything else in the world was perfect, he wasn’t.

Every Single Vote Matters

Elections are right around the corner. Why does your vote matter?

In 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States legalized abortion in America. Since then, according to numbers from the CDC and the Guttmacher Institute, an estimated 63,000,000 babies have been aborted.

For decades, Christians and prolife advocates have toiled without much success in overturning national pro-abortion laws. Even now, the reversal of Roe v. Wade does not end the fight over abortion.

Truly ending abortion will require more than attacking abortion as morally wrong; it will require building a society that is pro-life.

Fair or Not

The 2022 Little League World Series baseball tournament made headlines because of an unfortunate controversy between Oregon and Washington. They were tied 2-2 in the bottom of the last inning. Washington was up to bat with a runner on first and a chance to win the game.

The controversy erupted when Washington’s next batter hit the ball down the third-base line into foul territory. The third-base umpire immediately signaled a foul ball. At the same time, the home plate umpire signaled a fair ball.

Sharing Christ in a Cancel Culture

“Cancel culture” has exploded onto the scene in recent years.

Initially, cancel culture sought to erase from memory historical figures who held questionable views. Statues were torn down. Plaques were removed. Names were removed from history books.

The concept quickly broadened into a crusade to redefine our cultural understanding of key foundational concepts: family, marriage, social justice, patriotism, faith, and religious freedom. All of which has created a growing tolerance for intolerance. Bullying, name calling, and intimidation are deemed acceptable so long as they further the cancel culture agenda.

Take Care of the Little Things

Do you know what genuine integrity looks like? It can be hard to spot because it’s often found in the small, everyday actions of life.

Jeff Eaves hired me right out of college to work for the Tension Corporation. We became good friends. He eventually assumed the role of a strong mentor in my life, and it’s no stretch to say that I saw him as a kind of father figure. In fact, it was Jeff who gave me my first lesson in the meaning of integrity.
