The Real Way to Wealth

Welcome to Thanksgiving Monday.

Do you ever feel like everyone has more than you?

On today and tomorrow’s Focus on the Family radio program you’ll have a chance to listen in on a conversation I had with one of the wealthiest women in the world.

No, not Oprah Winfrey or an heir to Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Warren Buffet.

Her name is Susie Larson.

There was a time not too long ago when she had more bills than income and more mouths to feed than food.

Is Marriage Going Out of Style?

On Thursday, USA Today published a story highlighting new research from the Pew Center claiming marriage to be obsolete.

A gross exaggeration?

You think?

Christianity Today very graciously invited a response and just published it in today’s online edition.

I would welcome your thoughts and reaction.

Marriage in Obsolescence

Why recent headlines on marriage don’t do the new Pew survey justice.

Black and White Problems

Bob Herbert is a respected and decorated opinion columnist for The New York Times. On the paper’s website he’s referred to as a journalist known for his “fearless articulation of unpopular truths.”

This past Monday Mr. Herbert lived up to his billing when he opined about the heartbreaking state of the African-American family.

The veteran columnist served up a one-two punch. After noting that black boys and girls are three times more likely to live in single-parent households than white children and twice as likely to have a parent without a full-time job, he dove directly into the heart of the crisis:

The first and most important step (to fix the problem) would be a major effort to begin knitting the black family back together.

Stay Calm, Dad!

I’d like to share something with you that’s cute, funny and inspirational.

How could you pass that up?

What you’re about to hear is a recording of a 5-year-old girl’s call to 911 on behalf of her ailing father. Savannah’s dad was having trouble breathing and unable to call for an ambulance. Thankfully, the story has a happy ending. But this highly intelligent little girl not only had the wherewithal to summon the paramedics, but she displayed some classic femininity in the process.

Stepmothers

Would it surprise you to learn there are approximately 15 million stepmothers in America today?

On yesterday and today’s Focus on the Family radio program, we’ve gathered a panel of stepmoms to talk about it. All of these women are willing to share candidly about the joys and challenges of inheriting the privilege of motherhood.

Their stories are inspiring. Their testimonies are encouraging. I hope you’ll tune in.

I recently came across a touching poem that beautifully and poignantly tries to answer the question, “What is a stepmother?” Its author is intimately familiar with the topic.

My Friend Bob

I want to tell you a story about a friend of mine. His name is Bob.

Bob and I have known each other for decades. Over the years, I’ve seen him get married and he’s seen Jean and me welcome our boys into the world.  We’ve laughed and prayed together and shared many ups and downs of life. He is one of those good friends where no matter how much time has passed between conversations, the talk always comes easy.

Hyper-Texting Teens and Sex

First and foremost, a very Happy Veteran’s Day to one and all!

Our hale and hearty thanks to our many veterans and active duty personnel.

May we always remember that freedom is never free.

Turning a corner, I wonder how many of you heard about the new study out this week that suggests teens who text 120 times a day or more are more likely to be sexually promiscuous or use drugs and alcohol than kids who don’t text as often.

Do Pets Go to Heaven?

A colleague sent me a note the other day, more of a joke than anything, about a business that promises to take care of your pet after the Rapture.

But it’s no joke. It’s a real for-profit enterprise.

The company, Eternal Earth Bound Pets, USA, was started by a consortium of atheists. From their website:

“Q: Is this a joke? A: No. This is a serious offer to our Christian friends who believe in the Second Coming and honestly care about the future of their pets after the Rapture occurs.”

They charge $110 per house and promise to place your animal with those left behind.

Dirt Roads

When was the last time you drove a dirt road?

Living out west in Colorado, just along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, it’s not very hard to find one. The boys love it when we’re forced to venture off a paved street and find ourselves bouncing and navigating gravel and rocky paths. I have to admit, it’s kind of fun, so long as we don’t bust a hole in the gas tank, crack a windshield or blow the shocks or struts on the car.
