If you’re familiar with my story as told in FINDING HOME, you know my dad did a lot of things wrong. Dad had an ongoing struggle with alcohol, gambling and horse betting. His poor choices damaged my parents’ marriage to the point where he and Mom divorced when I was five. After the divorce, he didn’t provide any child support so Mom had to work three jobs just to keep the lights on and food on the table.
Despite the troubling memories, there was one delightful habit I can remember during my early childhood. Every Saturday morning, my father turned the kitchen into Dad’s Restaurant. I’d awaken to the smell of bacon sizzling in the pan and find him, towel draped over his right shoulder, scrambling the eggs with the flair of a chef.
I absolutely loved the way he’d scoop me up with one arm and pull me close to his chest. I drew strength from his embrace. Ever so carefully, he’d juggle my breakfast plate in the other hand, deposit me in my chair, and then set the feast in front of me. Digging in, I’d watch as he continued to work his magic at the stove for my siblings. Whatever other faults he may have had at the time, during those precious moments my dad hung the moon.
With Father’s Day approaching, maybe you have a similar memory of something extra special your dad has done–or does–for you on a regular basis. Maybe he tucks you into bed and reads books to you until you fall asleep. Maybe he spends unhurried time fishing with you. Maybe he’s a great listener and enjoys late night conversations over a bowl of ice cream. Whatever it is, at Focus on the Family we’d like to know. We’re giving you a chance to brag on dad.
Which is why throughout the month of June we’re conducting the “I Know A SuperDad” contest. Here’s how it works. In 100 words or less, tell us about the SuperDad in your life. What has he said or done that you’d like to share with the world? If your story is selected, your dad will win a TiVo Series 2DT DVR complete with a full year of TiVo service. We’re also tossing in a fantastic Adventures in Odyssey DVD set.
Every Friday in June we’ll select two winners from two different age groups: 17 and under, and 18 and older. No, he doesn’t have to be a perfect man. Nobody rises to that standard. But at some point I bet you’ve experienced a side of your dad that has brought joy to your heart.
I’m looking forward to hearing your story!
