Solo parenting is one of the toughest jobs in the world.
I’ve seen firsthand just how tough. I was from a single-parent home. After my parents divorced, my mom took care of five kids. Jean and I have also worked with a young man who lost his wife and has been struggling to raise his kids. It’s been eye-opening to see the world through his eyes as closely as we have over the last few months. That’s why, if you’re a solo parent, my heart goes out to you.
Why am I referring to “single parenting” as “solo parenting”? It’s actually Robert Beeson’s idea. Robert is best known for his work in the Christian music industry. He’s developed award-winning artists like Jars of Clay, Third Day, and Casting Crowns.
After 13 years of marriage, Robert’s wife left him with their three daughters. When reconciliation failed, he had to learn how to be both parents to his girls when he felt barely capable of being one. He started by re-branding single parenting. “Single” is a label. “Solo” is a condition. He says solo parenting can be a season where you encounter intimacy with God like never before.
That’s real, life-giving hope for thousands of moms and dads who need it. According to the most recent census, 1 in 3 homes in America is a solo-parent home. And 67 percent of those parents don’t attend church. They need hope.
Robert is with us to share God’s hope through his own story of painful challenges as a solo parent. He’ll connect with your heart, and offer practical advice for thriving in that season of life. He’ll also help you find healing for yourself and your children and discuss how to act toward an ex-spouse with whom you may be completely at odds.
Robert Beeson founded a ministry called the Solo Parent Society, which provides podcasts, support groups, and resources for single parents. Join us for “Thriving as a Single Parent” on your local radio station, online, or on our free phone app if you’d like to take us on the go. Also, check in our online store for Robert’s book published by Focus on the Family called Going Solo: Hope and Healing for the Single Mom or Dad.
I thank God for each of you solo parents who are serving the Lord and showing your children that God still loves us, even in our brokenness.
