“…to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”
A lot of us recited similar vows at our wedding, but no sooner did we walk the gauntlet of flying rice than the word “cherish” began fading from our vocabulary. We didn’t mean for it to happen. The years went by, we settled into our lives, and we woke up one day with a marriage that was missing something deeper, more satisfying.
Visible light is perceived as only one color, but shine it through a prism, and you discover it’s actually a whole rainbow. The best marriages see love like that. Many couples see their relationship through one color: “commitment,” “sacrifice,” maybe “patience.”
Those are all important virtues that keep a marriage together, but we want our marriages to soar, not hopelessly flail about because we’re merely tolerating one another or just “hanging in there.” We want our marriages to ignite with passion.
We want to be cherished.
To “cherish” means to hold dear, to show affection, to care for or nurture someone. When Adam first saw Eve, there was literally no one to compare her to. Eve defined what a woman was for Adam, and Adam defined what a man was for Eve.
That’s probably how it was for you and your spouse on your wedding day. You stood at an altar in front of family, friends, and acquaintances, but it was as if you were the only two in the room.
Feeling cherished is what led both of you to marriage in the first place, and it’s what you’d love from your marriage now. The question is, how do you get there?
We want to help you answer that question today and tomorrow on our broadcast with Gary Thomas. Gary is a gifted writer and part of the teaching team at Second Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.
He’s also been a popular guest on our program in the past. This time will be no different. When you tune in to “Cherish Your Spouse, Change Your Marriage,” you’ll hear practical steps that you can implement today and take your marriage to the next level.
Even if you think it’s too late for your relationship, we have hope for you. We’ll aim you in the right direction and help you build a stronger relationship by making cherishing one another a daily reality, not a “once on a wedding day” experience.
