The President Should Have Called The Pastors First

There’s a curious article in this morning’s New York Times detailing the evangelical fallout from President Obama’s decision last week affirming his support of same-sex marriage.

The headline reads:

After Obama’s Decision on Marriage, A Call to Pastors

The article described a presidential conference call two hours after Mr. Obama’s announcement with approximately eight African-American ministers, followed by additional phone conversations with several of his spiritual advisors. In each of the calls the president attempted to explain his rationale for the decision.

Majority Support For Same-Sex Marriage is a Myth

Political consultant Frank Luntz calls it “poll-driven language” – the tendency to phrase a question in a way that will generate a desired answer. Operatives on both sides of the aisle have been doing this for years, but it’s especially blatant when it comes to the reporting of support/opposition to same-sex marriage.

Case in point, a recent New York Times story which was headlined, “Support for Gay Marriage Outweighs Opposition in Polls.” The report was based upon an average of various polling data which supposedly revealed that 50% of Americans support same-sex marriage while 45% oppose it.

Will Marriage Be a Major Issue in 2012 Election?

I’m obviously very pleased with the results of yesterday’s election in North Carolina, where voters passed a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.I am less pleased, as you might imagine, with President Obama’s announcement today that he has changed his position and now personally supports same-sex marriage.

To help put the vote and announcement in context, I’d like to share some comments and observations, which are excerpts from my recent Washington Post editorial on the subject.

It Takes Guts To Walk Away From a Fight

Have you been following the controversy surrounding homosexual-rights advocate and writer Dan Savage and remarks he made at the National High School Journalism Convention this past April?

The address was billed as an anti-bullying talk but quickly digressed into a series of highly critical comments decrying orthodox Christianity.  After Mr. Savage used a vulgarity to describe the Bible, approximately one-hundred students made their exit in protest. However, this quiet response raised the ire of the columnist, who then used another vulgarity to criticize the protesters.

These Students Need Prayer

If you have a moment today, please pray for the safety and wisdom of those high school and college students who will be participating in this year’s Day of Dialogue. The ultimate goal is for Jesus to be glorified.

Citizenlink’s Karla Dial reports…

Students Enter Dialogue This Week

Thousands of high school and college students in approximately 40 states are preparing to engage their peers in discussions about sexuality and God’s love today, as part of the annual Focus on the Family-sponsored Day of Dialogue.

The Two Lies Too Many People Believe

“Our culture has accepted two huge lies: The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear them or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do.

Both are nonsense.

You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”

This is the Face of Clarity, Charity and Conviction

Up until yesterday morning, Karen Handel, who is openly pro-life, was the vice president of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. But as the controversy continued to swirl over Komen’s decision to reinstate its funding of Planned Parenthood, Ms. Handel resigned her post.

“I was too much of a focal point,” she said. “I really felt I had a responsibility to just step aside so they could refocus on their mission.”

Karen Handel refused to accept a severance package that was offered.

Prop 8 Marriage Decision Stings But Doesn’t Shock

I suspect more people were surprised with the New York Giants victory in the Super Bowl than were shocked to learn that two members of a three-member panel of the liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals have once again ruled California’s Prop 8 marriage vote to be unconstitutional.  The decision will now be appealed and we’re optimistic that the United States Supreme Court will agree to hear the case.

Still, although there is no shock regarding today’s decision, it stings.

The Komen Foundation was Bullied by the Left

The Susan G. Komen foundation succumbed this past Friday to a relentless barrage of political bullying, a fact that is not only sad news for those who cherish the sanctity and dignity of all life, but also for all of us who believe that a private philanthropic organization shouldn’t be subjected to such harassment.

That the Komen foundation apologized for its decision to halt contributions to Planned Parenthood is another illustration that political correctness is running amok.

Are You One of the “Crazies” ?

After a relatively quiet few months on the same-sex marriage front, activists in both Washington state and New Jersey have expressed a strong desire to push for legalization via their respective legislatures.

In Washington, some leading giants in corporate America have taken sides. Regrettably, Starbucks, Microsoft and Nike have all expressed strong support for what they view as “marriage equality” even though it’s anything but. As I and others have expressed on numerous occasions, same-sex marriage activists are striving to redefine, not equalize, a multi-millennial institution.
