FOX News viewers are familiar with Brit Hume, the popular political commentator and journalist. The 69-year-old television veteran is the network’s senior analyst and a keen observer of culture. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of sitting down with Brit for an extended conversation during a visit to Washington D.C. I found him to be a true gentleman, and he shared with me a little bit about the painful death of his son, Sandy, to suicide.
Look for This at Tonight’s Debate
At the height of a close election, it is worth a reminder that civility is the essential democratic virtue. Civility is not the same thing as niceness.
The high stakes of politics can produce intense disagreements. But manners — even cold, formal ones — communicate a modicum of mutual respect and preserve the possibility of cooperation. John Stuart Mill called democracy “government by discussion.”
Michael Gerson, as quoted in The Washington Post, October 15, 2012
What I Saw at Last Night’s Debate
“It’s fun, isn’t it?”
Those were the words of Governor Romney shortly into last night’s presidential debate with President Obama. I was privileged to attend the event along with three of my colleagues, Joel Vaughan, Ken Windebank and Gary Schneeberger (pictured below, left to right).
I have to admit. The debate was fun.
In the midst of the political frenzy and the seriousness of the stakes on November 6th, it’s easy to lose sight of something significant.
This NFL Player Said What?
And you thought the matter of replacement referees was controversial.
Earlier this season, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo publicly expressed support for same-sex marriage.
In response, Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr., a Ravens fan, wrote a letter to the Ravens owner, Steve Bisciotti, asking him to prohibit his players from offering political commentary.
Outraged by the Maryland politician’s letter, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe penned a lewd, rude and profanity-laden letter to Mr. Burns, chastising him for not only encouraging censorship but also, supporting traditional one-man, one-woman marriage.
Why the Presidential Election Could Come Down to Your Vote
When you review history, it’s remarkable how many things have been decided by the slimmest of margins:
Who can forget the presidential election of 2000? You’ll recall that George W. Bush defeated Vice President Al Gore by just 537 votes in Florida.
A race for the Alaskan House of Representatives in 2008 came down to a single vote.
That same year, Al Franken defeated Minnesota’s U.S. Senator Norm Coleman in a hotly contested election. Only 225 votes separated the two men.
The Six Myths Christians Believe About Politics
After nearly a year of toiling away on the project, my latest book, ReFocus: Living a Life that Reflects God’s Heart, will be released next month.
What’s it all about?
I don’t want to give it all away, but if there is one theme woven throughout all the pages of the book, it would be this:
Are we more concerned with shaping (and winning) the debate than we are with shaping and refining our own attitudes toward the world?
A Timely Quote
“We have forgotten God.
We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us.”
– Abraham Lincoln, 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation
The Professor Who Dared Rock the Boat
Mark Regnerus’ life was turned upside down this past June when he published a study in the journal, Social Science Research, with findings that contradicted popular homosexual activist talking points.
The respected associate professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin became fodder in the blogosphere and was accused of committing “scientific misconduct” by several individuals and organizations.
What was so controversial or egregious about Dr. Regnerus’ research?
In short, the professor’s study found that children who are raised by parents who have had a same-sex relationship don’t do as well in life when compared to children of married heterosexual parents.

This is what you looked like at just 12 weeks in the womb:
Should Churches Display the American Flag?
With the opening of the Republican National Convention this week and the Democratic Convention next, the American flag will be front and center as members of both parties proudly fly and wave the red, white and blue.
It’s difficult to put into words the emotions and sentiments that stir when the Stars and Stripes ripple in the breeze. When you know that men and women have died in its defense, you can’t help but stand a little straighter when you see it.
