One of the Most Controversial Super Bowl Ads of All Time?

Amid all the hoopla surrounding this Sunday’s Super Bowl, I can’t help but think back to the 2010 game. That’s the year Focus on the Family debuted its now-famous ad featuring Pam and Tim Tebow. It still gives me a chuckle to think how some groups branded our innocuous commercial “inappropriate,” “offensive” and “hate masquerading as love” – all without ever seeing it!

These allegations led to an intense media blitz leading up to the game that had me speaking with and appearing on what seemed an endless number of media outlets.

VIDEO: Pro-Life Movie “Gimme Shelter” Opens Today

I want to tell you about a new movie – and a modern-day hero.

Kathy DiFiore is the head of a network of shelters for pregnant teens in New Jersey. Kathy has spent the past 35 years “in the trenches.” Her five shelters are run 100 percent on donations, and have saved more than 20,000 babies.

But DiFiore’s work goes beyond saving preborn children – she also helps their moms. Several Sources Shelters provide teen moms with childcare support, education and assistance programs.

VIDEO: Looking Back on 41 Years Since Roe v. Wade

Today, pro-life advocates will be participating in the 41st annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. Their participation – despite the snow and cold temperatures – solemnly testifies to the beauty of preborn life, the worth of each and every woman facing an unplanned pregnancy, and the need for us, as a country, to embrace a culture of life.

I was supposed to participate in that march today. I traveled from my home in Colorado to New York City for some work-related meetings before the march.

Returning to a Culture of Life

It’s hard to think back to a time when the majority of the culture was as acutely aware of life inside the womb as it is now.

Think about it this way: thanks to ultrasound technology, it’s commonplace to see pictures of preborn babies. They’re found on Facebook. They’re displayed in picture frames that say “coming soon.” Expectant parents even share videos of their 4D ultrasounds so family members can see their preborn son or daughter move around in the womb.

Focus Celebrates More Than 230,000 Babies Saved from Abortion

Every January Focus on the Family commemorates the sanctity of human life in all of its beautiful forms.

It was, of course, in January 1973 that the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its tragic decision on Roe v Wade, which legalized abortion in all fifty states.  Since then about 51 million babies have been lost to abortion.

In the midst of this somber reality is a ray of hope – more than ever before we’re seeing Americans identify as “pro-life.” As technology helps to reveal the reality and beauty of life in the womb, a greater number of women facing unplanned pregnancies are choosing to parent their babies, or to place them for adoption.

VIDEO: Meet the Man Who’s Redefining Beauty

Once upon a time Rick Guidotti was a fashion photographer taking pictures of those that many considered the most beautiful.

I’m sure the images pop into your head: people who are tall and toned and tanned.

But thankfully, Rick has a mind of his own. He had an idea.

It was about 15 years ago when he considered photographing a woman with a disability. That’s when he realized how medical textbooks coldly document men, women and children with physical and genetic abnormalities.

Can There Be a “Wrongful Birth?”

We’ve all heard of “wrongful death” lawsuits – a civil action where someone seeks damages against a party for causing a person’s demise.

Well, there’s a new trend gathering steam: the “wrongful birth” lawsuit.

But … can there even be such a thing?

Apparently some people think there is. Parents who paid for prenatal screening for genetic abnormalities ultimately had children born with conditions that had gone undiagnosed. A handful of these parents have contended in court that, had they known of the disabilities their preborn children had, they would have aborted rather than carried the children to term.

What Would You Tell Yourself?

The other day I found my boys, Trent and Troy, giggling over an old photo album they’d found. After plopping into the couch with them and enduring some good-natured ribbing about old hairstyles and clothing choices their mother and I had once made, one photo in particular grabbed my attention.

It was a snapshot of me with my arm around Troy’s shoulder when he was about five years old. I was immediately struck by how much he looked like me at that same age.

Guest Post: Gosnell and the Danger of False Thinking

By: Kneeland C. Brown, Ed.D.

In my role as the executive director of the Focus Leadership Institute, I try to impart practical life principles to college students. These young men and women enroll because they want to learn how to best serve their families, churches and the culture.

Each semester, we discuss a myriad of things, but if I had to boil it all down, I’d say most of our discussions revolve around two main themes:

You can’t serve well if your thinking isn’t right
Right thinking starts with using Scripture as the singular authoritative truth for how we live.
