What John Piper Learned from His Father – Part I

I’m on my way to New York this morning to record a radio program with Dr. Tim Keller, senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church and author of the excellent new book, The Meaning of Marriage.

I’ll let you know in the coming days when the discussion will air.

For now, I wanted to share with you a powerful list of poignant lessons. They come from the pen of pastor and author, John Piper. They are among the top things he learned from his father, Dr.

A Portrait of Grace

Our daily broadcast today features a fascinating conversation with my dear friend and colleague Tim Goeglein. Tim is currently serving this ministry as our Vice President of External Affairs.

Prior to joining the Focus team, Tim was with President George W. Bush for seven and a half years. He knows Washington – but even more importantly, he knows and appreciates the gift of God’s grace and forgiveness. Today’s discussion is a beautiful story from that era about redemption and a remarkable turn of events.

Tim Keller: Grace and Truth

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, today and tomorrow’s Focus on the Family radio program features my conversation with Dr. Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church. I hope you’ll tune in by clicking here.

Tim is obviously a very gifted man on many levels, but I am especially appreciative of the graciousness by which he conducts his ministry. He is not just an intellectual, a theologian or a best-selling author, but also a Christian gentleman.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is Here

History repeats itself.

Back when I was in high school I can remember the buzz among friends surrounding the release of SI’s famed swimsuit edition. Over thirty years later people are still talking and arguing about this annual tradition. Turn on FOX News and you’re likely to hear them discussing it; try and buy a copy of the Wall Street Journal at an airport newsstand and you’ll be visually accosted with displays promoting this issue.

It would be easy to dismiss this year’s release with the trite observation that “sex sells” – a true statement.

How to Solve 90% of Your Marital Problems

Since you’re not perfect, your marriage can’t be perfect, either.

Agreed?

But what would you say if I told you 90% of the conflicts in your marriage could be resolved by doing just one thing?

Does it sound implausible, too good to be true?

Not according to recent guests on our daily broadcast, Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott.

According to the research, 90% of marital conflict could be resolved (or avoided) if we simply put ourselves in our partner’s shoes.

Saved on a Sidewalk

Our broadcast with former Planned Parenthood employee Abby Johnson has resulted in many emotional phone calls, letters and emails to us here at Focus on the Family. (To listen to the entire two-day program, please click here.) Abby’s story is a beautiful picture of what redemption from sin can look like for those who repent, believe and put their faith in Jesus Christ.

One listener, Sandra, wrote with a beautiful testimony of what can happen when a pro-life advocate puts their faith into action.

Don’t Buy an Airline Ticket On . . .

Earlier this week we were talking with financial guru Dave Ramsey. Dave is an expert at helping families get – and stay – out of debt. In case you missed it, simply click here to listen to our discussion.

In the spirit of helping with family finances, the Wall Street Journal is out today with some interesting news.

Did you know that the very worst time of the week to buy airline tickets is over the weekend?

You Can Find Hope in Troubled Times

I was recently talking with a friend, and he began to draw a parallel between a mutual acquaintance of ours and my childhood. The person in question is a real survivor and currently managing a rather chaotic existence. He said it reminded him of me and the untraditional life of my youth.

While there are similarities, I suggested there was a significant distinction between the two. Unlike this friend of ours who appears content with his troubled lot, I managed to survive abandonment and loneliness because of one main thing: I lived in a constant state of hope, always praying and dreaming that I might someday, someway, trade chaos for order and an unconventional family life for a traditional home.

Remembering Dr. Ben Armstrong

Dr. Benjamin L. Armstrong was the first executive director of the National Religious Broadcasters(NRB) Association. He arrived from Trans World Radio in 1966 and served as NRB’s leader and main visionary until his retirement in 1989.

He saw potential where others saw problems. When told something couldn’t be done, he was dismissive of the negativity and would instead respond with a two-word reply: “Why not?”

When he died this past December the 12th at the age of 87, his passing was not widely noted outside industry news and periodicals.

President George W. Bush

I am delighted to see that our interview with former President George W. Bush, which airs today and tomorrow, has generated a tremendous amount of interest.

In fact, news of our two-day broadcast is prominently featured on USA Today’s home page.  The Washington’s Post’s website is also highlighting the program.

My interview with Mr. Bush is the first time the 43rd president has granted a sit-down with Christian media. As you’ll learn, our conversation covers a wide variety of topics, including the death of his sister Robin when he was 7; his love affair with his wife, Laura; his feelings in the wake of the Sept.
