Plight of the Orphan: Emotional Video

Have you ever thought about adopting, about rescuing a child from a bad situation?

Today’s Focus on the Family broadcast, The Plight of the Modern Day Orphan, features a great discussion on the topic with my friends and colleagues, Paul McCusker and Kelly Rosati. They joined John and me to discuss the impact of Charles Dickens’s tale “Oliver Twist” during an age when orphans were largely disregarded, and reiterate today’s need for orphan protection and care.

Little Angels Help Lift Up Little Eyes

To many, Christmas is the season of angels, and I’m not referring to Clarence Odbody, George Bailey’s fictional guardian angel (Second Class) in the perennial holiday favorite It’s a Wonderful Life.

During Advent and Christmas we remember Gabriel’s historic appearances to Zechariah (Luke 1:11-20) and, of course, Mary (Luke 1:26-38), as well as the angel’s message to Joseph (Matthew 1:20). Then there is the angel who appeared to the shepherds (Luke 2:9-14) announcing Jesus’ birth. And finally, we remember the angel who appeared to Joseph again in a dream, warning him of Herod’s intent to kill his newborn son and advising him to escape with the family to Egypt.

Attention, Boomers!

If you were born before 1961, this announcement is for you.

Focus on the Family will be hosting a very special “Focus over Fifty” conference from March 10th thru the 13th here on our Colorado Springs campus. Titled “Inspired to Thrive” the gathering will feature Tim and Darcy Kimmel, Dr. Del Tackett, Rob Parsons and comedian Ken Davis. I’ll also be addressing the group – even though, for the record, I was born in 1962.

Although different generations share many similar attributes, those in their 50s and 60s enjoy several distinctives.

Win a Trip to London!

Our team here at Focus on the Family has been working on a terrific contest to help celebrate the launch of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, a Focus Radio Theatre production based on the C.S. Lewis classic, The Chronicles of Narnia. Our award-winning Radio Theater weekly program has been rereleased to the national radio airwaves this fall.

As for the contest: I’d love to share some details about it with you and hope you’ll consider passing this blog on to your friends and family.

When I Am Weak

As promised, here is the first chapter of my new book, Stronger: Trading Brokenness for Unbreakable Strength.

Thanks for reading along!

**

Chapter 1: When I Am Weak

This isn’t how it works in the movies.

On a chilly Sunday morning in December, David Works and his family—his wife, Marie, and daughters Stephanie, Laurie, Rachel, and Grace—finish worshipping at New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

As usual, they stay after the service to enjoy conversation with friends.

An Eye to the Future

Do you remember the movie Back to the Future, the fun iconic film of the 1980’s featuring the then-rising star, Michael J. Fox? It spent 11 weeks at the top of the charts in the hot summer of 1985 and spawned two popular sequels. That seems like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?

In a way, I was reminded of that film while recording yesterday’s Focus on the Family radio program. Along with Dr. Juli Slattery and John Fuller, the three of us went back in time and discussed the foundational principles of the ministry.

Your Family Live!

I’m thrilled to announce that last Wednesday Focus on the Family launched Your Family Live! If you missed it, don’t worry. This is a web-based TV program airing live each week, Wednesdays 2-3pm EST. Co-hosted by Dr. Juli Slattery and Yvette Maher, Your Family Live! is especially dedicated to the topics of marriage and parenting.

The debut program featured special guests Jill Savage, Blog Mom Jennifer “McKMama” McKinney, Tammy Maltby and Toby Mac.

When I’m Weak I’m Strong

Over the last several weeks I’ve been putting the finishing touches on my new book entitled, Stronger, which is scheduled to be released this fall. I realize the title might be a bit misleading. After all, it’s not a workout manual, a primer on pumping iron, or getting fabulous abs of steel. While I do have a treadmill in the basement and believe in physical fitness, the idea here has to do with building strength of character.
