Five Things You Might Not Know About the Ryder Cup

You’ve heard of the Ryder Cup and might even know a little bit about the storied golf tournament, but do you know anything about the man behind the trophy?

In this age of negotiating naming rights and corporate sponsorships, a youngster recently suggested the Ryder Cup was named after the Ryder Truck Company.

Not quite.

Because many of you are interested in golf and since Focus on the Family will be sponsoring a special event (more on this in a moment) in conjunction with this year’s tournament in Medinah, Illinois, I thought it would be fun to share five things you probably don’t know about the history of the Ryder Cup.

These Students Need Prayer

If you have a moment today, please pray for the safety and wisdom of those high school and college students who will be participating in this year’s Day of Dialogue. The ultimate goal is for Jesus to be glorified.

Citizenlink’s Karla Dial reports…

Students Enter Dialogue This Week

Thousands of high school and college students in approximately 40 states are preparing to engage their peers in discussions about sexuality and God’s love today, as part of the annual Focus on the Family-sponsored Day of Dialogue.

A Tough Day at Focus

Many of you regularly pray and support this wonderful ministry, so I wanted to alert you to some staffing reductions here at Focus on the Family.

This past Friday, due to budget constraints, we were forced to say goodbye to 49 team members.  What follows are some thoughts that I shared with my colleagues after the decision was announced:

***

Many of these individuals are friends with whom I have labored side-by-side for years, some two decades.

Get Well Soon, Dr. Dobson!

We learned last night that Focus on the Family founder, Dr. James Dobson, took a fall while horseback riding with friends. Although he suffered several broken bones, he’s in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery.

Please join me and the entire Focus team in praying for him.

Welcome, Dr. Greg Smalley!

I’m delighted to announce that Dr. Greg Smalley has joined the team here at Focus on the Family. From time to time you’ll be hearing him on our radio program, reading his articles and most importantly, benefiting from his wisdom and practical insight on marriage and parenting.

What a pleasure to welcome Greg to Colorado Springs!

If the name rings a bell, perhaps it’s because you’ve already come across Greg’s work yourself, or it may be because Greg is the son of our great and longtime friend, Dr.

Attention, Boomers!

If you were born before 1961, this announcement is for you.

Focus on the Family will be hosting a very special “Focus over Fifty” conference from March 10th thru the 13th here on our Colorado Springs campus. Titled “Inspired to Thrive” the gathering will feature Tim and Darcy Kimmel, Dr. Del Tackett, Rob Parsons and comedian Ken Davis. I’ll also be addressing the group – even though, for the record, I was born in 1962.

Although different generations share many similar attributes, those in their 50s and 60s enjoy several distinctives.

Don’t Buy an Airline Ticket On . . .

WANTED: Your Family Photos!

You probably know Focus on the Family’s motto is “Helping families thrive.”

What you may not know is that our Colorado Springs campus is a significant tourist destination – we’ve had more than 200,000 visitors come through our doors annually for many years running. They come to learn more about who we are and what we do and to share with us how our radio programs and resources have helped them. There is plenty for them to enjoy as they walk through our facility, but one thing is missing.

You Can Find Hope in Troubled Times

I was recently talking with a friend, and he began to draw a parallel between a mutual acquaintance of ours and my childhood. The person in question is a real survivor and currently managing a rather chaotic existence. He said it reminded him of me and the untraditional life of my youth.

While there are similarities, I suggested there was a significant distinction between the two. Unlike this friend of ours who appears content with his troubled lot, I managed to survive abandonment and loneliness because of one main thing: I lived in a constant state of hope, always praying and dreaming that I might someday, someway, trade chaos for order and an unconventional family life for a traditional home.
