The Future is Bright!

If you were to sit where I sit and see what I see on the horizon, I’m sure you’d agree that God is very much at work at Focus on the Family. Of course, for practical reasons, sharing my chair isn’t an option. So let me run down a number of the reasons why I’m energized by the journey ahead of us.

The first one is a biggie.

God moved in the hearts of several incredibly generous donors to introduce our mission—namely, Helping Families Thrive—to an audience of tens of millions of families.

Help for Haiti

Assigning adjectives to the devastation brought on by the Haitian earthquake threatens to bankrupt the English language. Currently, reports are circulating that thousands are dead. Morgues are full and bodies are piled high along the debris-strewn streets. Scores more are likely still trapped, and hundreds of thousands of the country’s island residents are without the basic necessities of life.

The needs are breathtaking and nearly endless in scope and size. But along with our prayers, we might offer a very tangible contribution to the relief efforts by making a monetary contribution to one of the many excellent organizations on the ground in Haiti.

Been There, Missed That

Three years ago this week, something extraordinary happened at the L’Enfant Plaza Subway Station in Washington, D.C.. It was a frosty 43 degrees as thousands of early morning commuters hustled through the metro station. A man, wearing a non-descript, black long sleeve shirt and baseball cap, stopped along a gray granite wall, pulled a violin from its protective case, and then started to play.

In spite of the near freezing temperatures, the musician’s nimble fingers danced across the strings as he played six classic pieces by Bach.

Brit Hume and Tiger Woods

FOX News political commentator Brit Hume shocked some people over the weekend by offering the following advice to golfing legend Tiger Woods:

The extent to which he (Woods) can recover (from his extramarital affairs) seems to me depends on his faith. He is said to be a Buddhist. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. My message to Tiger would be, “Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.”

Not surprisingly, public reaction was swift, mixed and spirited.

Top 10 Daly Blog Posts for 2009

You can tell we’re fast approaching the end of the year because bloggers and pundits alike are churning out a virtual potpourri of Top 10 lists. In addition to the customary Top 10 Movies, Top 10 Songs, and Top 10 Books of the year, I actually came across a list of the Top 10 Dirtiest Hotels.

Just for fun, I’ve assembled two Top 10 lists of my own. I thought they might give you an idea of which topics resonated with other readers of this blog.

There Are No Accidents

Have you ever found yourself stuck behind a slow moving truck on a two-lane road where passing is prohibited? Maybe you encountered that rolling roadblock when you’re already pressed for time to get to a meeting. Or perhaps it happens on a day when you’re already tardy picking up the kids from school. Then again, maybe the delay isn’t caused by a slow moving vehicle—it’s caused by an obstinate buffalo staring you down in the middle of the road.

A Presidential Christmas Trivia

Okay, I’ll admit it’s the weekend after Christmas and I’m not quite ready to let go of the season. These unhurried days spent with my family are priceless. Of course there’s the food, the caroling, and the romping around in the Colorado snow that typifies this holiday break. But I also enjoy a good trivia game.

With that in mind, here’s a White House oriented, Christmas-themed trivia game just for fun.

Special thanks to historian David Barton for assembling his comprehensive “Christmas With the Presidents” from which these questions are derived.

Jesus Isn’t Safe

Here’s something to think about as you celebrate Christmas today. Have you ever considered our focus on Jesus in the manger? You know, Jesus as a baby. I don’t know how you celebrate birthdays in your home, but when Jean and I put up the streamers and bake a cake for our boys when their birthday’s roll around, we don’t dust off their baby books and remember the day they were born. Rather, we enter into the joy of who they are today.

Name That Christmas Carol – #2

Here’s a fun activity a friend sent to me that I originally posted several years ago. Once again, I thought you might enjoy using this game with the family over the Christmas holiday. The goal is to see who can identify the real song title from this list of twenty-one hints.

You could divide the guests or family members into two teams or simply make it every person for him or her self. Maybe sweeten the pot with a White Elephant gift for the person or team who gets the most correct answers.

Merry PC Holiday of Choice

When it comes to talking about Christmas, it seems there’s some hesitancy on the part of our public figures these days to recognize the heart and soul of this particular holiday, namely, that the promised Savior, Jesus, was born. Such is the tragic by-product of political correctness which attempts to whitewash history into an inoffensive mishmash of feel-goodism.

This, of course, wasn’t always the case. I would have been twenty-years-old when President Reagan gave this address to the nation as Christmas day approached.
