Happy Father’s Day to All the Unsung Heroes

Father giving piggy-back ride to young son

In my latest book, “The Good Dad,” I spent a lot of time and pages on the importance of dads simply “being there” for their kids.

“Our kids aren’t asking for perfection,” I wrote. “They’re asking for our presence – to show up for the job each and every day. They’re asking us to be there for them, to guide them, to hug them.”

When we’re there with them, accompanying them in the trenches of everyday life, we’re able to serve as a guiding influence over our children.

Would You Choose a Pet Over a Child?

They call them “fur babies,” and many couples in the U.S. are opting for them. One headline aptly described it this way: “Americans are having dogs instead of babies.”

The United States isn’t unique in this trend. We’ve seen for a while now how birth rates worldwide are plummeting and the number of pets are increasing. Japan, a country where sales of adult diapers outnumber those of baby diapers, has a population of more than 22 million pampered pets versus only 16.6 million children under 15.

Typing v. Handwriting: Which Would You Choose?

Elderly person addressing a letter

Typing and “quick communication” have taken over our lives.

From the endless emails that are part of many of our jobs to text messages asking if someone can pick up bread and milk on their way home, typing has largely replaced handwriting.

Scientists are beginning to warn us that this move to all things technology isn’t completely beneficial. Last month The Boston Globe’s article “Taking notes? Bring a pen, skip the computer” connected handwriting with memory retention.

What Do You Do for Family Fun?

While we’re still a few weeks from the official start of summer on June 21, the Daly Family already has a summer kind of mind.

My wife Jean snapped this picture of the boys and me after we had enjoyed some time boogie boarding in Corona del Mar, California and were at the Shake Shack to watch the sunset.

We make it a point to spend some family time just having fun every summer – after all, laughing and playing together is a great way to make some treasured memories.

The Ultimatum that Saved a Marriage

couple holding hands

His marriage was dead. It was past acrimony and fighting. Comedian Jeff Allen and his wife, Tami, were at a stage of apathy.

After years of his alcoholism and fits of rage, it got to the point where Tami always had her back to Jeff.

Finally, one night, Jeff and Tami were in bed when he tried to talk with her – except she refused to turn around.

“No, please,” she said.

“What’s the problem?” Jeff inquired.

WATCH: Two Powerful Minutes of Must-See Video

Tomorrow Focus on the Family’s first movie, “Irreplaceable,” will debut in more than 700 cinemas across the country. Seats are filling up fast (with some theaters already sold out) – despite attempts to censor our documentary.

Just in time for tomorrow’s premiere, we’ve released a powerful new trailer for the film. Check it out below:

As you can see, “Irreplaceable” is far from just your average documentary. Yes, you will leave the theater empowered and equipped better to defend your Bible-based views.

Businessman’s Kindness Towards Girl with Autism Hope-Renewing

You may have seen the headlines:

–        Hotel guest leaves nasty letter for parents of crying baby

–        Panera Bread kicks out toddler with disability over orthopedic shoes, mom says

–        Restaurant bans kids at night, joins others in adding child-free policy

Sometimes it seems like the culture is making our job as parents more difficult. While I understand that some moms and dads can be overly permissive, there are signs that the general public’s tolerance towards children seems to be waning.

Guest Post: Adoption is Gritty and Glorious

The fourth post in my National Adoption Month guest series highlights The Batura Family. Paul Batura is a longtime Focus team member who currently serves as Focus’ vice president of communications. He and his wife Julie adopted their three boys at birth.

My hope is by highlighting these real-life adoption stories, families who are considering and praying about adoption may learn a little more about the process. I hope that readers will see how God uses adoption – both the gritty and the glorious – for His glory.

VIDEO: Children Make a Difference

One of the greatest tasks of any parent is to raise children who care about others, and who show God’s love to their fellow man.

While there is no “10-step” program to ensure our kids will grow up to value “the least of these,” there’s something we can do to help instill this heart of compassion in our little ones. We can create an environment of awareness, and encourage our children when they seek to live their faith.

Guest Post: The Schmitts Adopt Abby

For many families looking to adopt, the ride can be scary and expensive. That was the case for friends of Focus on the Family, Jonathan and Amanda Schmitt. The Schmitts’ story is the third in the adoption series I’m running during this November, National Adoption Month. (You can also read parts one and two.)

Here’s the Schmitts’ adoption story, as told by Amanda.

Months turned to years and I still wasn’t pregnant.  We were beginning to question what was going on.
