The Secret to Being a Happy Wife

What’s the secret to being a happy wife?

Is it expecting more from your marriage? Expecting less? Does happiness come from working hard? Or from feeling content with what you have?

Author Jen Weaver – and my wife, Jean – say balance is important. They’re both guests on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “The Secret to Being a Happy Wife.”

There’s good and bad to having too-high or too-low expectations.

Jen is a self-admitted “high-expectant wife” who had a lot of ideas about how her marriage could and should operate.

Filling Your Marriage with God’s Best

Do you have a “barely enough” marriage?

Would you like to have one that is “filled to the brim”?

John 2:1-11 tells the story of the wedding at Cana, where Jesus turned water into wine. A marriage celebration was underway, and the host ran out of wine. At the urging of his mother, Jesus instructed the servants to fill six stone jars, each holding twenty to thirty gallons of water.

The passage says that the servants filled the pots “to the brim.” Those three words offer a revealing insight into the approach God wants us to take in our relationships.

Harnessing Your Strength to Transform Your Marriage

Wonder Woman.

Batgirl.

Black Widow.

The Invisible Woman.

Wives.

What do all of these women have in common?

Well, they all can be strong and fierce in character. They’re all capable of having bold convictions and standing firmly behind their decisions. Really, the comparisons could go on and on.

There’s really only one difference: Fictional superheroines are esteemed because they stand on their own and lead their lives independent of men.

God never intended Christian wives to do the same.

Connecting Spiritually with Your Spouse

How to spiritually connect with your spouse may be one of the most misunderstood concepts in marriage.

Couples tend to think in terms of spiritual activities they ought to dotogether: Read their Bible, pray, go to church together, memorize Scripture.

Certainly, those are important spiritual disciplines, and they fit the personality of a lot of people especially well. Some couples are so structured they treat devotions like mini-church. They gather together each night, read verses from the Bible, share their thoughts, and close in prayer for one another.

Finding Hope for Your Desperate Marriage

You can’t change your spouse.

Period.

So what do you do if your marriage is in a desperate place?

Many couples believe there are only two choices: “I can stay here and be miserable for the rest of my life, or I can get out of this and hope that I’ll find happiness somewhere else down the line.”

Dr. Gary Chapman says that’s a myth. There’s a third option: “With God’s help and with godly counsel from others, I can choose to positively influence my marriage in such a way that it creates the greatest possibility for my spouse to choose to change their behavior.”

The idea that you can change your spouse is a myth.

Helping Engaged Couples Become More We-Focused

Lucille Williams was washing vomit out of her clothes when she thought, “This is marriage.”

She was on her honeymoon with her husband, Mike. It was the last night of their cruise, and they were enjoying a final dinner with friends they’d made that week. Suddenly, an unexpected bout of sea sickness hit Mike, and he began vomiting uncontrollably. Their dinner guests scrambled to get out of the way, but it was too late for Lucille.

Healing Our Hurting Marriage

Do you ever waste time with your spouse?

That may seem like an odd question. But your answer will get to the heart of what your relationship with your spouse is all about.

You see, some couples don’t do too well with “wasting” time with one another. Simply being together with no particular agenda and nothing to focus their attention on except their spouse is uncomfortable.

In other words, they have a hard time with intimacy.

Experiencing the Best Marriage for You and Your Spouse

According to some reports, Americans spent $72 billion on wedding ceremonies last year. That puts the average cost in the neighborhood of $30,000 per ceremony.

By contrast, most married couples will never invest a fraction of that amount into the marriage itself.

A successful marriage isn’t the by-product of an extravagant ceremony or an expensive honeymoon. If that were the case, celebrities would routinely set the standard for strong, healthy marriages.

A happy, fulfilling marriage isn’t about the big day, it’s about the every day.

Restoring Your Marriage After Infidelity

“He walked in, and I knew something was horribly wrong. I thought someone had died. I didn’t know it was our marriage.”

That comment from Mona Shriver about the moment she learned her husband Gary was committing adultery, reflects a sentiment felt by almost a third of couples. One or both partners admits to involvement in extramarital affairs, and life as they know it dies.

Gary and Mona Shriver are here with us from California to talk about the emotional devastation they went through as a result of an affair.
