How Dredging Up the Past Can Help Your Marriage

We’ve all heard the warnings about “dredging up the past” when dealing with challenges in our marriage. But there are times, I think, when a little dredging is just what your relationship needs.

Morehead City, North Carolina, is home to one of the deepest ports on the East Coast.  It’s a vital passageway for commercial and military ships.  But the port developed a serious problem when Hurricane Sandy deposited sand in the channel — and lots of it!

For Those Married and Unmarried

A colleague recently shared with me about a medical situation her father once encountered. He suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA) – commonly known as a mini-stroke. Her parents live far away, and she was on a video call with her dad when it happened.

All of a sudden, Dad kept asking me what day and what year it was. He kept asking when my children were born. “Wait a second,” he’d say… “I’m confused.”

After a couple of minutes of this, I asked Dad to put Mom (who was in the other room) on the phone.

Don’t Be “That Guy” this Valentine’s Day

When it comes to the 14th of February, the one thing I don’t want to be referred to is this:

“That guy.”

You know who “That guy” is…

At worst, he’s the guy who forgets about Valentine’s Day altogether, at least until he gets to the office and is reminded when he sees all the red and the flowers and boxes of heart-shaped candy on the desks of his female colleagues.

He’s the guy who waits until 6 PM on Valentine’s night and stops off at the supermarket to try and fulfill his obligation.

Don’t Do This to Your Family

Clovis Chappell, a minister from a century back, used to tell the story of two paddleboats. They left Memphis about the same time, traveling down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. As they traveled side by side, sailors from one vessel made a few remarks about the snail’s pace of the other.

Words were exchanged.

Challenges were made.

And the race began. Competition became vicious as the two boats roared through the Deep South.

One boat began falling behind.

Four Reasons Women Cheat

There’s an essay that caught my attention on Foxnews.com this morning. It’s written by a woman named Marina Pearson. According to her byline she’s a writer and speaker whose career is dedicated to helping women “who are struggling to get over their ex to move on in a safe and nurturing environment.”

Her article is bluntly titled: “Why I Cheated on My Husband.”

That would be “ex-husband,” now. But what were the reasons? According to Ms.

Three Ways Marriage Improves Your Health

I want to share with you some scientific findings about the family that were culled from nearly 35 years worth of research. The results were analyzed and compiled by two of my Focus colleagues, Andrew Hess and Glenn Stanton. Following is a condensed version of their full report.

The Health Benefits of Marriage

The pursuit of health has become a cultural phenomenon. Diet, exercise, supplements, relaxation and medications have all been touted as the way to achieve good health.

Five Types of Weekend Warriors

Do you have a home improvement project planned for this weekend?

When it comes to fixing or building things around the house, the late writer, Andy Rooney, once identified five categories of people.

Which one best describes you?

1. The person who knows how to do it, and proceeds quietly and efficiently to get the job done right, alone. This is a rare species.

2. The helpless. This person can’t do it, won’t try to do it, and has no interest in learning how.

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Marriage

Terri Orbuch is a psychologist and research professor at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. She recently identified some of the top common regrets of divorced couples.

“Divorced individuals who step back and say, ‘This is what I’ve done wrong and this is what I will change,’ have something powerful to teach others,” she recently told the Wall Street Journal.

Here are five things divorced couples regret not having done more of with a few comments of my own:

1.

Would You Take Friends on Your Honeymoon?

According to a recent article in The New York Times, more and more couples are bringing their friends and even their parents on their honeymoon. In fact, there’s even a newly coined term for the practice:

The Buddymoon.

To borrow Dave Barry’s famous phrase, “No, I’m not making this up.”

Interestingly, though, it’s the newly married couple who are instigating the extended celebration with family and friends.

With cohabitation on the rise, a special romantic getaway for the newlyweds doesn’t quite have the same draw.
